German Australian Business Council meets International Business Councils Munich

In 2017, the International Business Council Munich (IBCM), a business networking forum that brings together members of 16 international business organizations active in the Munich area was launched. The IBCM’s mission: “To combine the strengths of the participating IBCM groups in joining for business events of mutual interest and in addressing topics of common interest.  An umbrella organization, the IBCM provides an organizational interface, supports the sharing of ideas, facilitates making new business contacts, and stimulates learning.”

The International Business Council Munich (IBCM) held a Kick-off Event on Tuesday, 13th March 2018.

The event featured Keynote Speaker Dr. Wolfgang Hübschle, Executive Director, Invest in Bavaria with “Disruptive Technologies and the Effects on Local Marketing”.

Afterwards each IBCM organization provided a 2-minute elevator speech on its group’s key features and upcoming events. GABC board member Elisabeth Opie gave an excellent overview of our business council, including its mission statement and outreach.

More than 100 guests enjoyed a buffet dinner with networking in the foyer. In parallel, members of each organization were available for informal discussions on their respective groups.

Luncheon with Australian cyber security delegation in conjunction with Austrade- Munich

Some members  and friends of the German Australian Business Council had the pleasure of participating in a luncheon meeting with a cyber security delegate group from Australia on the 16th of February, 2018 in Munich.

As the Australian delegates were in Germany to attend the Munich Cyber Security Conference 2018, they also took the opportunity to engage in a wider program of briefings and customer engagement opportunities  in both Munich and Berlin. These visits included meetings with government and policy stakeholders, corporations, academics and R&D institutes with an interest in the areas of cyber policy, financial services, artificial intelligence, future mobility and defence supply chain.

Over the informal lunch, guests had the opportunity to build new networks and to discuss both the German and Australian business and policy environment for cyber security companies and strategies for business from a bilateral perspective. Special guest Dr Tobias Feakin, Australian Ambassador for Cyber Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) was present to discuss these issues with the attendees.

The German Australian Business Council is very grateful to Kelly Sims and the team from Austrade for providing the opportunity to attend such an interesting event.

Christmas Networking Dinner Munich

On December 14 the German Australian Business Council invited members and friends to a joint Christmas Networking Dinner together with the Munich based Anglo Bavarian Club (ABC). As in the last years it was an ideal opportunity to meet new people and discuss the 2017 events as well as the basics for 2018. There was a fantastic Bavarian touch set dinner and everybody enjoyed the pre-Christmas atmosphere.

One highlight was the chorus of all participants singing two Christmas songs conducted by Hamish Douglas, the chairman of the ABC.

Business Networking at Oktoberfest 2017 – German Australian Business Council – Lunch

The 3rd German Australian Business Council Oktoberfest Business Networking Lunch Event took place On 29 September 2017. German Australian Business Council members and guests met at the Löwenbräu Festzelt. Everybody enjoyed the unique atmosphere at lunch time.

Outside the tent the typical Bavarian white blue sky was shining and inside the tent we enjoyed nice music, some mass of beer and the obligatory Hendl.

A lot of new contacts and interesting talks took place.

Business Networking at Oktoberfest 2017 German Australian Business Council – MING

The German Australian Business Council Oktoberfest Business Networking Event took place on 24 September 2017. German Australian Business Council members and guests met at the Schottenhamel Festzelt. Together with 180 participants of the MING (Munich International Networking Groups) everybody enjoyed the unique atmosphere at lunch time.

Outside the tent the typical Bavarian white blue sky was shining and inside the tent we enjoyed nice music, some mass of beer and the obligatory Hendl.

A lot of new contacts and interesting talks took place.

Business Networking Bavarian Style 20th Anniversary BBQ Munich

On July 15th more than 20 participants came to Buchenhain in the south of Munich to commemorate 20 years of connecting Germany and Australia. As part of the Waldgasthof Buchenhain’s well established annual Sommerfest in Baierbrunn we had a separate area, where we were in the position to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere in the Biergarten and listen to live music from three different bands. This event was a great chance for business networking with fellow German Australian Business Council corporates, members and friends.  We also had the pleasure to see a couple of new faces interested in our work.

AHK Mining 4.0 Dialogue

The German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK) organized a President’s Delegation to Germany on May 17-19. The delegation was chaired by Honorary President Andrew Mackenzie. Visits were planned in Munich and Berlin.

Today a dialogue about Mining 4.0 took place with key German stakeholders and senior Siemens representatives at the Siemens world headquarters in Munich.

Key notes were given by Andrew Mackenzie, CEO BHP Billiton and President of the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Cedrik Neike, Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG.

In a panel discussion, moderated by Jeff Connolly, CEO Siemens Australia and New Zealand, opportunities between Germany and Australia in the mining sector were emblazed.

The German Australian Business Council was represented by Board Member Eberhard Goihl.

Business Breakfast Australien & Neuseeland: Geschäftschancen Down Under

On May 5th, 2017 the IHK München und Oberbayern held a breakfast event for businesses and other interested people to evaluate potential future business opportunities in Australia and New Zealand. Most insightful and first hand information was given by Birgit Tegethoff who is a Director Consulting Services at AHK Australia and Monique Surges who is the CEO of AHK New Zealand. From an investor’s point of view, Prof. Klaus Josef Lutz, CEO (BayWa AG) shared his experiences having invested in both countries in different industry sectors. The presentations were followed by a Q&A session and a networking opportunity.

The German Australian Business Council was represented by its Board Members Melanie Töpfer and Eberhard Goihl who introduced the German Australian Business Council to the participants.

World Doctor’s Orchestra 2017

For the first time in its 10-year history, the World Doctors Orchestra visited Munich and on the evening of 22 April and played a brilliant concert at the historic Herkulessaal at the Münchener Residenz. Members and friends of the German Australian Business Council joined the symphony orchestra’s performance of pieces by Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner, including arias sung by renowned soloist mezzosoprano Stella Grigorian and a highly demanding arrangement of ‘Der Ring’. Led by conductor Professor Stefan Willich, the World Doctors Orchestra is a unique symphony orchestra consisting of physicians from more than 50 countries who come together to perform high-end classical music for a charitable cause. The evening’s proceeds were donated to Obdachlosenhilfe St. Bonifaz in Munich.

Upon invitation by our corporate member Sonic Healthcare Germany, German Australian Business Council members joined a reception immediately after the concert themed ‘Meet the Musicians’.

Expat in the City Fair 2017 in Munich

On Sunday 11 March, The German Australian Business Council participated in the Expat in the City Fair in Munich for the first time.

The Expat in the City Fair was a one-day event full of information and inspiration for all internationals living in Munich. Questions about topics such as finances, insurances, education, daycare, expat life, job search and fun things to do in the Munich area were all answered at the fair – all in one day and all under one roof at the BMW Welt.

More than 2700 visitors came looking for and found all the great information and inspiration provided for them.

We had a lot of interesting conversations and found many new contacts and business opportunities.
