Sommerfest der Berliner Wirtschaftsverbände 2021, Berlin, September 2021

For the first time since 2019 the Berliner Wirtschaftsverbände were able to host a Sommerfest again – and what a spectacular relaunch it was! At a new city centre location and under strict 3-G rules a myriad of partner organisations participated. The weather held up and there was a very strong turnout, including more than 20 GABC RSVPs from across north east Germany. It ensured many opportunities to mingle in a relaxed atmosphere and network with peers, including those from the local Berlin region, Germany and also with members from other international associations (including organisation representing the UK, China, Thailand, the Netherlands, etc). The now traditional tombola this year supported Handicap International and offered over 100 prizes – alas this year without any Australian wines on offer – for that you will have to come back next year.

Networking BBQ- Berlin, June 2019

On 5 June GABC Berlin hosted an after-work networking BBQ at the former Australian Embassy to the German Democratic Republic in Berlin Pankow which is now the base for a local artist collective (https://ex-embassy.com/en/). The small informal event was attended by a dozen members and friends who enjoyed the vast garden, cool drinks and communal cooking experience alongside interesting conversations with other guests and the resident artists. The evening’s highlight was the guided tour of the historic landmark building and some of the exhibitions on display by the artists. We look forward to hosting further relaxed after-work events for the Berlin community in the near future. The next Berlin event will be the annual Sommerfest der Wirtschaftsverbände at Chalet Suisse on the 30th of August, 2019.

Ambassador’s Dinner 2018- Berlin

After a four year long wait, the German Australian Business Council’s festive Ambassador´s Dinner returned to Berlin on 21 June, 2018. Held at the Australian Embassy in the city centre, this year´s edition of the well-established dinner format brought together guests from various business and economic sectors as well as friends and supporters of the German Australian Business Council.

Two keynote speeches were introduced by a welcome from Dr Sabine Pittrof, Chair of the German Australian Business Council. The evening was moderated by Board Member, Evangelos Kotsopoulos and Board members Simone Wienhausen and David Urry gave a farewell after awarding the raffle prize draw.

In the first keynote, attendees heard from German Australian Business Council patron, Richard Leather, Australia´s Consul General and Senior Trade Commissioner (Europe). Richard focused on overall bilateral relations between Australia and Germany and the remarkable work achieved between various working groups over the past few years. Citing the recent Perth conference as a highlight, he turned to the upcoming negotiations around an EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement and showed the advantages such arrangement would have.

This year´s second keynote was delivered by Mr. Terry Nichols, General Manager of Rheinmetall Defence Australia (Electronic Solutions). On his birthday, Terry explained the nature of German defence industry group Rheinmetall´s presence in Australia and discussed the group’s recent successful bid for a large Australian Government contract. It was interesting for the audience to hear about the specific, long-term and complex nature of the very large defence procurement projects in which companies such as Rheinmetall and others participate.

Over a three-course dinner, the guests enjoyed in-depth conversation and a relaxed evening.

Special thanks go to this year´s sponsors who made this event possible in the first place. Sonic Healthcare Germany (gold sponsor) as well as the State of South Australia and Aesop kindly supported the evening.

Siemens Factory Tour in Berlin on 12th of October 2017

German Australian Business Council invited member and friends to a tour through the Siemens Vacuum Interrupter (VI) factory which took part on the 12th of October 2017 in the “Siemens Röhrenwerk Berlin”, located in the Berlin district of Siemensstadt, were Siemens was once founded.

Around 80% of all power grid operators today opt for vacuum switch gear. The market share of vacuum circuit breakers is more than 99% in Germany.

Vacuum interrupters are the centerpiece of our medium-voltage components. The hermetically sealed vacuum contact gap keeps the switching characteristics of the interrupters constant throughout their entire life-cycle. Special contact materials made by Siemens ensure that the vacuum interrupters offer absolutely top performance. With valuable features that include high short-circuit switching capacity and minimum forward resistance, they ensure reliable switching even under difficult environmental conditions – like vibration and fluctuating frequencies – regardless of whether they’re installed horizontally or vertically. The vacuum interrupters can perform up to 30,000 operating cycles when used in circuit breakers and up to three million for contractors – maintenance-free, throughout their entire service life.

For Decades of experience in development and manufacturing Siemens is a pioneer and a technology leader in the vacuum switching technology. Only highly automated, state-of-the-art machines and production processes are used in our production facilities to guarantee the best quality.

During the tour the participants received a glance on the VI production and during the introduction in the Information centre the variety of the whole spectrum which is produced in Siemensstadt was presented. Thank you for the grateful event. We are looking forward to the next tour.

Australia Day Reception at the Australian Embassy

German Australian Business Council board members took part and networked on the occasion of the Australia Day reception at the Australian Embassy Berlin. In her speech, Ambassador to Germany Ms Lynette Wood pointed out the latest achievements in Australian German relations as well as prospects for the future. Highlights among others during the last year were various visits by members of the government to Germany showing the strong ties between the two countries. Among the prospects for the future is a great number of cultural events of the Australia Now 2017 campaign. This outlook as well as the embracing hospitality of the ambassador and the staff of the Australian Embassy Berlin once again showed our members that Australia is a close friend rather than a distant nation.
